    A Look Back at 2016

    New Beers
    2016 saw us release 15 new beers; our first cans (Iti & IPA), three bottled beers previously only on limited edition draught (Solar Sour, Tonka & Chuckleberry Sour) plus Bourbon Barrel Aged Northern Imperial Stout, Tiramisu, Lime Wood Wild, Kai Moana Gose, Session IPA Mass Collab Brew, Orbit Pale Ale, Northern Imperial Stout, Vienna Lager, Dry Hopped Citra Sour and Earl Grey & Seville Orange Sour.

    In the Spring we completed an expansion project allowing us to increase capacity. We extended our fermentation room, added new vessels and built a new cold-conditioning room. Having been brewing at capacity for a year it means we’ll be able to increase production up to 14,000 hectolitres (that’s about 2.5 million pints) a year.

    International Rainbow Project
    It was green again for us at the Kiwi edition of this epic collab project. The sea surrounding both island nations was the inspiration for our Yeastie Boys collab Kai Moana Gose. Yet again the project produced some of the most talked about and in demand collab beers of the year. The draw for 2017 has been made and we’re heading back to the USA. Our partnering brewery is Modern Times and we get to brew with them not once but twice - the second brew will be barrel aged for an extra special release in 2018.

    We won industry awards not just for our beers this year but also for our tap, The Beer Hall, which was voted Pub of The Year by Westmorland CAMRA. We picked up four Golds, a Silver and a Bronze at the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) North West Region Beer Competition, Tonka taking the top title of Overall Champion Bottled Beer. Windermere Pale and Lakeland Lager in bottle also won Golds plus IPA in cask Bronze. We had two beers in the final of CAMRA’s Champion Beer of Britain competition and both won medals - NZPA took silver and Hawkshead Bitter bronze (in their categories).

    Northern Craft Beer Festival
    This year we celebrated our 10th summer beer festival and to mark the occasion we did a mass collaboration brew - Head Brewer Matt was joined by 12 other craft brewers to create Session IPA. Brewers from Magic Rock, Thornbridge, Cloudwater, Marble, Quantum, Siren, Buxton, Fyne, Runaway, Pivovar, Ashover, and Roosters pitched in to brew the 4.7% fruit-bomb of a beer.
    243 casks and kegs, of 106 different beers from 29 breweries were drunk dry during the three day festival.

    Collaboration Brews
    This year we worked with 18 breweries, 12 of which descended upon Staveley in July for our Northern Craft Mass Collab Brew. Most recently we brewed Tiramisu with Wayne Wambles from Cigar City, with the Indy Man Beer Con team there was Lime Wood Wild, for the Rainbow Project with Yeastie Boys there was Kai Moana Gose. For Manchester Beer Week Matt brewed at Runaway to produce Manchester Tart, at Stewart in Edinburgh – Margarita Gose and back in January he got together with Blackjack & Quantum to brew Manuka.
