  • Hawkshead Brewery’s Head Brewer, Matt Clarke, is presented with a silver medal at “the brewing Oscars” awards ceremony at The Guildhall in the city of London, on Wednesday ( 29/4/15) .

Hawkshead’s “Brodie’s Prime Export” won the silver medal in the strong dark beer category. It was one of more than 800 beers from 41 countries, entered in the Brewing International Awards, which are held every two years and are known as the brewing Oscars.

Organisers claim to have “the world’s most professional tasting panel.” All judges are brewers.

This is the second time Hawkshead Brewery have scored at these awards – in 2011 Windermere Pale also won a silver medal.

    New Beer - Solar Sour

Caption: One way of viewing the eclipse

The brewery has always been a fan of sours (with several being included on the beer list for our spring festival) but it took three rare celestial events, a supermoon, solar eclipse and spring equinox, before we brewed one.

Aptly named Solar Sour, the latest beer to be added to our limited edition range, was brewed on Friday 20th March and is a take on the classic German Berliner Weisse.

True to style at just 3.3% ABV and very pale in colour Solar Sour is a refreshingly tart cloudy wheat beer with a lemony citric fruit sharpness. The intriguing sourness is a distinguishing feature of Berliner Weisse and is created by fermenting the beer with our house yeast in the presence of lactic acid bacteria. Cold conditioned, carbonated and served from keg Solar Sour is a superb beer for a hot summer’s day.

Let’s now just hope we have the weather to match the beer! Solar Sour will be launched at The Beer Hall on Friday 17th April with a successive launch at our tap takeover and meet the brewer event at North Bar in Leeds on Thursday 23rd April. A damson edition (very very limited quantities) will follow once it has finished ageing.

    Hawkshead Hits Leeds

On Thursday 23rd April we’re leaving our home in The Lakes and heading to West Yorkshire for a meet the brewer evening and probably our largest tap takeover to date at North Bar in Leeds.

North Bar will be showcasing 11 of our beers including new, rare and year-round favourites. They’ll be launching new limited edition beer, Solar Sour, a Berliner weisse-style beer brewed on 20 March, the day of the solar eclipse and the spring equinox. They’ve got a rare cask of Oat Wine, our collaboration with Wild Beer Co, an 8.8% beer aged in cider brandy casks. Plus a keg of Wild Wheat, the first from the new batch, also aged in wood and fermented with Brettanomyces wild yeast.

Brewers Matt and Mark plus Ben from Sales will be there from 5pm so you can have a chat with them over a pint.

The full beer list is as follows:
Cask - Windermere Pale, Iti, NZPA and Oat Wine.
Keg - Solar Sour, Iti, Dry Stone Stout, Wild Wheat, Cumbrian Five Hop, IPA and Brodie’s Prime Export.

    Damson Stout

Our bar was drunk dry of Damson Stout on Saturday at Damson Day. The fair is one of the earliest in the Lake District show season and despite the Lyth Valley damson blossom being late this year it didn't stop people turning up in their thousands to enjoy the annual event.

If you missed us at Damson Day and would like to get your hands on some of this unique fruit beer we have a limited quantity available in bottle. You can buy a case online from our Beer Shop or if you're visiting Staveley you can pick up a few bottles from The Beer Hall.

    Damson Day

We're gearing up for Damson Day this Saturday. One of the few occassions, outside our own beer festivals, that we set up our own bar. Given the name of the event it may be no surprise to hear we'll be serving Damson Stout!

The annual event is held just 7 miles from the brewery at Low Farm in the Lyth Valley and is a celebration of the arrival of spring and the damson blossom. The fruit, once in huge demand during and after World War II for jam, has a tart flavour which not only works well in jam but in pies, liqueurs and beer of course.

Our damson beer, an oatmeal stout fermented with damsons from last year's harvest, has been brewed especially for the event. The tart plum fruitiness of the damsons are married with flavours of dark chocolate and coffee to produce a unique fruit beer. We'll be serving it from cask and keg, and for the first time, due to demand, in bottle. There'll be gift packs too so you can buy some to take home with you.

Further details of the event can be found on our 'What's On' page, or visit the Westmorland Damson Association website if you'd like to learn more about this little fruit of the plum family.
