  • Brodie’s Prime Export received international recognition on Friday 13th February with a silver medal in the Brewing Industry International Awards 2015.

It won silver in its category (Bottle Strong Dark Beer above 7%).

This was the first competition we have entered the beer in since first making it available in bottle in December 2013.

There were 843 entries from over 41 countries in the competition, which is 125 years old, and is held to have the most professional judging panel of any. It was held at the National Brewing Centre, Burton on Trent.

To be among the medals here is to be in some very good and very experienced company, Brodie’s Prime Export was beaten to the Gold medal by Brugse Zot Dubbel from Brouwerij De Halve Mann - a centuries old Belgian family brewery.

    Box of Jester hops

A new beer brewed with a new hop, Jester, touted as the closest to powerful American aroma hops ever grown in Britain, is our answer to a challenge by pub chain JD Wetherspoon, to showcase British not foreign hops.

The beer which we’re brewing for Wetherspoon’s Spring Beer Festival, is named “Jester,” the same as the hop, which is in its first year of commercial production.

It is a low strength (3.7%) pale beer, the better to appreciate the fruity hop flavours which Hop Merchant Charles Faram hope Jester will show.

Jester was grown as part of Faram’s hop breeding programme, to try to find a British equivalent of the big flavoured American and New Zealand hops which have found such favour among craft brewers.

Paul Corbett of Farams said they named the hop Jester because they assumed the grower was joking when he told them it was English. They thought it was American because of its big aroma. He hopes Jester will be the most successful new English variety they have so far developed.

We secured a supply of Jester, grown at Town End Farm, Bosbury, Herefordshire, in answer to the Wetherspoons challenge to brewers to supply only English hopped beers. Jester is a limited edition beer, we’ll be brewing only 100 barrels (16,400 litres). It will be available nationally during Wetherspoons 13th – 29th March beer festival and will be previewed at our own Spring Beer Festival from 6th to 8th March.

    New Beer - Hop Black

New beer Hop Black, part of our limited edition range, is out and drinking in cask and will soon be available in keg and bottle too. The 5.6% beer could be described as a Black IPA, a contradiction in terms - it is dark in colour but surprisingly light and refreshing on the palate. Brewed using specialist malts and big flavoured American hops (Chinook, Citra and Simcoe) the beer delivers aromas of tropical fruit and resinous pine. Check back at the end of February when you’ll be able to buy a case of 6 or 12 bottles through our beershop online.
