While on holiday in his native New Zealand earlier this year Head Brewer Matt was invited to do a collaborative brew at Fork & Brewer in Wellington, the craft beer capital of the country, by fellow Head Brewer Kelly Ryan.
Matt and Kelly first met as expats in the British brewing industry. Kelly is held in high esteem internationally having brewed at both Fyne Ales and Thornbridge Brewery in the UK as well as brewing for some of the best breweries in New Zealand (Good George, Epic).
Matt and Kelly’s creation is a Kiwi rendition of Brodie’s Prime named Parallel Importer, brewed using New Zealand Cascade and Motueka hops. “The result is this deliciously balanced hoppy brown porter” said Kelly, “NZ hops have been liberally dosed into this wonderful Kiwi malt-driven beauty. Enough chocolaty malt to tickle the tonsils of the dark beer lovers & a cornucopia of juicy berry hop notes to please the hop fans. It finishes smooth with a hint of sweetness.” Matt added “In a sea of pale and hoppy beers it was great to produce something malt-led which still entertains the hop-heads”.
Parallel Importer is being launched tomorrow (Wednesday 18th March) at Fork & Brewer and in several other craft beer bars in Wellington; The Rogue & Vagabond, Hashigo Zake, Kelburn Village Pub, Malthouse, LBQ, Basque and The Third Eye.
Unfortunately all 1100 litres of the beer are to remain in New Zealand so we can only dream of how it will taste.
