  • We are Cumbria Life’s Drinks Producer of the Year.

We were one of 5 finalists shortlisted, alongside Barngates Brewery, Lakes Distillery, Bedrock Gin and Stringers Brewery, for the 2017 Cumbria Life Food & Drink Awards which sees businesses judged in 15 categories.

The awards take place annually and aim to showcase and reward the best that Cumbria has to offer - the best restaurants, pubs, chefs, producers and retailers. The Drinks Producer of the Year award is judged on business success, development and innovation.

Head Brewer Matt said "even to be nominated is great but we are absolutely delighted to have won in such a strongly contested category. We work hard and it's great to be recognised for that".

    New Beer - XPA

The next brew in our cask session series.

This is Head Brewer Matt Clarke's take on the style XPA/extra pale ale which refers to the use of low colour malts creating a really clean pale base beer, the perfect platform to showcase the hops. A small amount of malted oats lend a nice mouthfeel and more palate fullness to the beer.

It's hopped with a combination of Citra and Jester. Jester is the UK variety that exhibits big fruit flavours akin to the Americans and has come from the Charles Faram hop breeding programme.

Malts: Low colour Maris Otter and malted oats
Hops : Jester (UK) Citra (USA)
    Aroma: Tropical fruits
Flavour: Citrus and slight herbal notes from the Jester

XPA is available in cask and is out for delivery to pubs and bars across the country from Monday 20th March onwards. It will feature on the bar at Northern Craft Beer Fest this weekend.

    Investment Deal

We’ve signed a far-reaching investment deal with the UK’s largest independent drinks company, Halewood Wines & Spirits.

Under the deal, we’ll build a new brewery, expand production & gain new routes to market, and Halewood will enter the UK brewing industry.

Brewery founder Alex Brodie said: “Demand for our beers exceeds our ability to supply. We have gone about as far as we can on our own. This partnership with Halewood will allow us to grow and fulfil our potential.”

I am convinced that Halewood share our values,” he said. “We have had a long negotiation and I believe that this deal gives Hawkshead a way of getting significant investment without being absorbed into ‘big beer.’ Halewood sees small, craft and premium as the future. And they are Northern. I like that.”

This is Halewood’s first entry into British brewing and they will take a controlling interest in us. Specific terms of the deal have not yet been disclosed.

Halewood’s CEO Stewart Hainsworth said: “Hawkshead Brewery will continue to operate independently of the Halewood Group, under Alex’s leadership, with Halewood as its main distributor and investor. Hawkshead brews great beers. We are delighted to help them carry on doing what they are so passionate about.”

Alex will continue as Managing Director, and our existing team will carry on running the brewery as a stand-alone business, within a small group of North West craft drinks-makers, under the Halewood umbrella. The group includes another Lakeland company, mineral water producer - Willow Water, Liverpool Gin distillery and North Wales whisky distillery, Aber Falls, which is due to open later this year.
