    New Bottled Beers

    New bottled beers

The latest beers to come off our in-house bottling plant include this year’s whiskey aged beers, our Christmas ale Jingle Fells and Damson Stout. They join other limited edition beers Sundown and Wild Wheat (released last month) in our line-up of beers for Christmas.

Following last year’s No1 Jack and No2 Jim in our annual project of oak aged beers are No3 Imperial Damson Porter 9.5% and No4 Brodie’s Prime Export Aged 8.5%. Both are strong, dark beers which have been matured in bourbon casks for 12 months. “The beers make an ideal after dinner drink and are a great alternative to port as an accompaniment to cheese and biscuits” says Head Brewer, Matt Clarke.

Previously only a cask product our Christmas beer, Jingle Fells, is available in bottle for the first time. Dark ruby red in colour with plenty of malt and a hint of Christmas spice, Jingle Fells is a warming winter ale at an easy drinking strength of 4.5%.

Also at 4.5% is our unique fruit beer Damson Stout. Normally only brewed once a year for Damson Day (a celebration of the local damson harvest) we’ve responded to demand for it to be made available in bottle. Made using damsons from the local Lyth Valley the beer marries together typical stout flavours with a tart plum fruitiness to produce a warming, rich, malty beer with a difference.

You can buy the beers from our online shop, from The Beer Hall here at the brewery or at selected specialist beer shops.

  • Hut8 Media presenting Ben from sales with the app.

We’re the first brewery in the UK to launch a mobile ordering app for trade customers. The app enables users to place an order for beer anytime anywhere.

The app uses the latest caching technology which allows data to be used and stored offline meaning the app is accessible at all times, even down in the cellar where there may not be a data connection. A publican (with a login & password) can browse the beer list, view artwork, tasting notes and prices and submit an order which will be stored on the device and sent once a connection is available.

Designed by local company Hut8 Media the catalogue style application has been developed for use on smartphones and tablets (currently for Android and iOS devices only). It uses our branding and clear graphics which make it easy to navigate.

Sales Manager Anne said “The app adds an extra customer service for those who want it. We’ve listened to publicans and responded to their requests to be able to order beer in their time and not first thing on a Monday morning with everyone else”.

Trade customers can download the app, free of charge, from the App Store or Google Play Store and register for a login. Just search ‘Hawkshead Brewery Sales’.

  • We were one of five UK breweries to be featured at Norwegian innovative craft beer festival What’s Brewing. The two day festival in the south-west coastal town of Stavanger, better known as the ‘oil capital’ in Norway, was host to 28 European and American craft breweries.

We exhibited 8 beers including one-offs Wild Wheat (a wild yeast fermented wheat beer), Oat Wine (an 8.8% beer aged in cider brandy casks) and Green Juniper & Hemp Double IPA (brewed as part of an international collaboration project).

Ben and Head Brewer Matt, alongside volunteers, staffed the brewery bar for the duration of the festival which was held at the town’s old Pilsner brewery, Tou Scene. The 218-strong beer list represented breweries from 9 countries and included the likes of Nøgne (Norway), Mikkeller (Denmark), Birra Del Borgo (Italy), Brouwerji De Molen (Netherlands) and Evil Twin (USA). Representing the UK alongside us were fellow craft brewers Beavertown, Buxton, Magic Rock and Siren.

Strict Norwegian alcohol laws prevented the festival from ‘advertising’ the beer list, however word of mouth on social media meant it was a sell-out. Over 2000 people attended the event and all tickets available on the door were snapped up quickly.

You can view more photos from the event on our Facebook Page.
