In collaboration with Lervig Brewery of Norway we have brewed a special one-off beer as part of The International Rainbow Project 2014 which is now in its second year (some of you may remember last year’s Parma Violet IPA).
This year’s project sees 7 UK breweries, each paired with a different European brewery, randomly assigned a colour of the rainbow and together challenged to create a beer inspired by that colour, whether it be abstract or not.
Breweries & their colours:
Magic Rock + Evil Twin (Denmark) - Red
Beavertown + Naparbier (Spain) – Orange
Buxton + Omnipollo (Sweden) – Yellow
Hawkshead + Lervig (Norway) - Green
Partizan + Mikeller (Denmark) – Blue
Wild Beer Co + Toccalmatto (Italy) – Indigo
Siren + De Molen (The Netherlands) – Violet
In July, Mike Murphy, Head Brewer at Lervig, joined us to brew the green inspired beer. The brewday actually took place on the Saturday of our Summer Beer Festival, giving drinkers the opportunity to watch the brewers at work.
Juniper berries, hemp seed and a shed load of hops were amongst the ingredients used. The result - a 7.5% double IPA with mouth smacking bitterness and aromas of pine. Heavy hopping from American varieties Simcoe and Mosaic mean the beer’s bitterness units reach 100 IBUs, traditional for this style of beer. (IBU = International Bittering Units, a measure of the actual bitterness of a beer as contributed by the alpha acid from hops).
The limited edition beer will be available in cask, keg and bottle and will go on sale following the official launch of all 7 rainbow beers at Beavertown Brewery on Saturday 13th September. Subsequent launches are being held at: The Hanging Bat, Edinburgh - Sunday 14th September from 7pm and North Bar, Leeds - Thursday 18th September from 6pm.
